Research Technologist – Johns Hopkins – Pediatrics

  • Seeking a full time Research Technologist to work in a laboratory in the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine that focuses on systemic inflammatory response syndrome.

Description:

Consistent with a translational research program, our goal is to investigate the mechanism(s) involved in the anemia-RBC transfusion associated systemic inflammation and to identify new therapeutic targets and treatment strategies. The candidate will assist in the development and execution of several projects involving conducting experiments, collecting/summarizing data, providing proper laboratory care, maintaining project data, contributing to manuscripts and funding proposals with supervision and interfacing with a diverse collaborative of physicians and scientists.


Responsibilities:

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

-Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
-Working knowledge of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
-Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include: basic tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, assays, basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques, including microscopy and biochemistry. Will utilize in vivo models in experiments and handle mice.
-Collects data and monitors data quality and accuracy as required by research protocol. Maintains appropriate documentation of research results, as required by research protocol. Recommends revisions to experimental methods based upon observations of the data.
-Participate in experimental design; plan, implement, evaluate and interpret results.
-Identify problems, troubleshoot, analyze variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols. Modify, refine, adapt techniques/procedures.
-Perform surgeries and care for laboratory animals; perform behavioral testing. Following experimental protocols, collect tissue in accordance with USDA, AALAC and IACUC guidelines.
-Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, verifies orders upon receipt.
-Performs histological processing including tissue sectioning, staining and -image analysis, flow cytometry, ELISA and routine cell culture.
-Responsible for preventative maintenance of equipment.
-Prepare, clean, sterilize, and maintain lab equipment, glassware, & instruments.
-Keep daily lab notes, maintain data and inventory spreadsheets.
-Assure laboratory compliance with regulatory requirements and JHU standards, policies/procedures.
-Clean and maintain work areas.
-Use computers and computer-interfaced equipment to perform required duties.
-Analyze experimental data as appropriate.
-Mentor students, teach laboratory techniques and share scientific knowledge.
-Review, edit and maintain updated animal protocols.


Qualifications/Preferred Skillsets:

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

-Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Pharmacology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Some related post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project.
Undergraduate research experience as part of their training is acceptable experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

-Must be knowledgeable of skills required in mouse colony management, histology, immunoblotting, tissue culture, flow cytometry and microscopy and perform animal work independently.
The candidate will perform established laboratory assays with the initial supervision of senior personnel until capable of performing those assays independently.
-Self-motivated and actively seeking to further develop skills, expertise and knowledge in hematology and medicine.
