Description:

A Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate position is available immediately at Albany Medical College in the laboratory of Dr. Ashley Kopec to study the neuro-immune mechanisms underlying sex-specific adolescent brain development and its contribution to social behavior, substance use disorders, and aging. Our studies utilize a variety of approaches, including molecular biology (qPCR, Western blot, ELISA), microglial isolation and ex vivo manipulation, immunohistochemistry and advanced microscopy analysis, cognitive behavioral testing, stereotaxic manipulation in relevant brain regions, and circuit tracing analyses in rats. The Kopec Lab is R03 and R01 funded, and Dr. Kopec has been NIH-funded at every career stage.

The post-Ph.D. period is a special time of scientific and personal exploration. Dr. Kopec is committed to helping the successful applicant define and navigate their career trajectory. As the first step in this commitment, this position is offered at two levels of the successful applicant’s choosing: Postdoctoral Fellow (NIH salary level; $54,835) or Research Associate ($65,000). The former has perks for scientists interested in an academic “PI” career track, while the latter provides more stability for scientists excited to do research but uninterested in pursuing an academic PI career. For those undecided, Dr. Kopec is eager to discuss how to make this position fit your needs.

Our research group values creativity, dedication, open communication, mutual respect, and team work. Dr. Kopec is committed to individualized mentoring plans to help trainees achieve the scientific career they desire. At a minimum, the training environment will include: one-on-one meetings, group lab meetings, neuroscience seminars, and journal clubs. Fully funded opportunities will be available to present your work at national and international scientific conferences at least once annually. The successful applicant will be replacing a previous Kopec lab postdoc, who presented at an international conference, attended an off-site, multi-day training course, and authored several papers before transitioning into their ideal career of choice as an Assistant Professor of Medical Education.

Qualifications/Preferred Skillsets:

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, or related discipline or plan to defend their Ph.D. in the next 12 months. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, and should be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent oral and written skills, organization, and a problem-solving attitude are required. Comfort with and respect for working with rodents as a research model is required. Additional expectations for the postdoctoral vs. associate positions should be discussed with Dr. Kopec.

All training will be provided, but experience with molecular biology, imaging, stereotactic surgeries, and/or behavioral experiments would be beneficial and should be emphasized in the application.
