The Jerome Laboratory in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is recruiting a Staff Scientist to conduct laboratory bench research to evaluate cure strategies and gene therapy for persistent viral infections including herpes simplex, hepatitis B, and HIV.

-Responsibilities include independently designing experimental approaches to testing the efficacy of candidate ccurative therapies for persistent viral infections both in vitro and in vivo, and ensuring appropriate experimental performance, and sample acquisition and analysis.
-The research will require working with small animal models (mice, guinea pigs). Technical approaches will include gene editing, AAV vectors, droplet digital and quantitative PCR assays, sequence-based assays, and other clinical and research assays as required.
-The scientist is expected to help write manuscripts and grant proposals, and to present research at scientific meetings.

Qualifications/Preferred Skillsets:

-Ph.D. in the field of Virology, Gene Therapy, Microbiology or experience in a related area.
-At least four years in related area or equivalent combination of education/experience.
-Experience in gene therapy is desirable, as is an understanding of basic viral biology.
-Experience using small animal models will be advantageous.
-Experience in evaluation of viral sequence diversity. The candidate should be enthusiastic about this research area, goal-oriented, a self-starter, and be able to work independently in a team environment.
-Strong analytical, writing, communication (in English), and problem-solving skills are desired.
